All said and done, the Kargil War stands out as the proud symbol of Indian Identity and Indian Unity while confronting an adverse situation imposed by the evil, unfair, and unjust actions of India’s Enemy.

26th July is an important date in my memory for I joined the Indian Army Medical Corps at Lucknow on this date in 1970.

The Bofors 155mm howitzers played a remarkable role in the Kargil War. I know the Indian Army Chief who purchased the Bofors Guns that played a major role in the Kargil War of 1999. General Krishnaswamy Sundarji, PVSM (28 April 1928 – 8 February 1999), was the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 1986 to 1988. He was the last former British Indian Army officer to command the Indian Army. I served under his Command when he was the General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of the First Armoured Division between 1976-78.

I commemorate the Victory in Kargil War of 1999 to acknowledge the fact of Special Frontier Force’s participation in this herculean war effort.

As many as 527 soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces lost their lives during the war.  The Kargil Vijay Diwas not only embarks upon India’s win but also pays homage to the fallen heroes who fought valiantly for the nation, and sacrificed their lives to make ‘Operation Vijay’ a success.

The occasion commemorates the glorious victory of the Indian armed forces against the Pakistan Army intruders in the Kargil, Drass and Batalik sectors in 1999.

2. In the Indian traditions of my Telugu or Andhra Family, such a framed portrait seen mounted on a wall in a living room is often used to show respect to a deceased person. TE3N Movie used my stolen Indian Army Picture ID photo image to prepare this framed portrait in a manner to indirectly claim the death of the person shown in the image. It is reasonable to assume that TE3N Movie Producer and Director have counted me among War Dead while knowing that I am a living person. In other words, the display of a portrait of a living person on a wall implies a non-verbal death threat or death wish.

Special Frontier Force – Operation Eagle – Liberation War of Bangladesh 1971:

The Victory Over Death – The Psychology of Warfare. The Connection between the Fruit and the Vine. To overcome the Fear of Death, the man is encouraged to sever the attachment to the Cycle of Life and Death which separates man from his true or real immortal essence. OPERATION EAGLE IS THE CODE NAME FOR MILITARY ACTION THAT INITIATED THE LIBERATION OF BANGLADESH ON NOVEMBER 03, 1971 WITH STRIKES ON THE ENEMY MILITARY POSTS IN THE CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS.

Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India initiated the Liberation of Bangladesh during 1971 with military action in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The battle plan of this military action is known as Operation Eagle. This blog post is related to the war experience obtained by conducting the military operation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The Victory Over Death – The Psychology of Warfare. The Connection between the Fruit and the Vine. To overcome the Fear of Death, the man is encouraged to sever the attachment to the Cycle of Life and Death which separates man from his true or real immortal essence. Kachumbar/Cucumber, Cucumis sativus, a native of India.
THE VICTORY OVER DEATH – BREAK THE PEDICLE OF ATTACHMENT – Man is attached to his life by a pedicle or attachment called ‘the fear of death’. Man conquers Death and can declare his Victory over Death by simply severing this attachment that arouses the sense of fear of Death. Spiritualism is the potency that brings man’s Essence and Existence to come together to establish the subjective reality of man in the physical world or the material realm. This hymn called ‘Mrityunjaya Maha Mantra’in praise of Lord Shiva known as ‘Triyambaka appears in the ancient Vedic Book of Rig Veda.’

This hymn in praise of Lord Shiva also known as ‘Triyambaka’ appears in the ancient Vedic Book of Rig Veda. It expresses a very unique idea or concept about conquering death. This idea has originated in India as this idea relates to a plant that is a native of India. Man is mortal, and just like a fully ripened fruit falls off from a tree, a man ripe in his age, even when not afflicted by any disease or sickness, would meet natural physical death. This Mantra suggests that a man can become immortal (a person who has consumed the divine nectar known as ‘Amrita’) and conquer physical death (Mrityu) by simply severing his psychological attachment to his own life and liberating (Mukshiya) himself from bondage. This Mantra compares the act of cutting attachments to free oneself (Mukti) to secure victory (Jaya) over physical death (Mrityu) to the act of harvesting Cucumbers (Urvaru). The pedicle (Kamiva or the stalk of the fruit) should be severed to separate the fruit from its attachment (Bandhan) to the Vine.

The Victory Over Death – The Psychology of Warfare. The Connection between the Fruit and the Vine. To overcome the Fear of Death, the man is encouraged to sever the attachment to the Cycle of Life and Death which separates man from his true or real immortal essence.

Cucumber, Cucumis sativus is a vine fruit. It is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is native to northwestern India and is being cultivated for thousands of years. The fruit is harvested in the immature stage and is eaten in its unripe, green form. The ripe fruit turns bitter and is not eaten. The fruit is firmly attached to the vine by its stalk or pedicle. The unripe, green fruit would not naturally fall off from the vine. The farmer harvests the Cucumber by cutting off the pedicle( Kamiva).

'DOSA KAI', A POPULAR CUCUMBER OF TELUGU PEOPLE.
The Victory Over Death – The Psychology of Warfare. The Connection between the Fruit and the Vine. To overcome the Fear of Death, the man is encouraged to sever the attachment to the Cycle of Life and Death which separates man from his true or real immortal essence. Dosakayi, a popular Cucumber of Telugu people.

This analogy of severing the connection and freeing the Cucumber also implies that man should not wait until he reaches a very ripe age to conquer physical death. A man who is still at an unripe age or still young in years, just like the unripe and green fruit of Cucumber, should plan to overcome death or his ‘liberation’ from death, by cutting away the stalk or pedicle which symbolizes attachment (bandhan). The attachment in the context of man and his mortality could be described as his ‘Fear of Death’. By overcoming his ‘Fear of Death’, a man’s attachment to the ‘Vine of Life’ is severed and he is ‘Liberated’ (Mukshiya) from Death (Mrityu). As long as the ‘Fear of Death’ is alive, man cannot win his battle against Death and mortality. To achieve ‘immortality’, man must conquer his ‘Fear of Death’. Indians seek to praise (Yajamahe) the Lord known as ‘Triyambaka’ for He had declared His victory over Death (Mrityu) by burning away all of His desires and had become Free from all Attachments. Lord Shiva physically demonstrates His Freedom from Attachments by covering His entire body with ashes (Bhasma), the burnt residue of His desires.

The Psychology of Warfare:

An Infantry soldier to ‘attack’ his enemy’s position has to physically ‘advance’ towards the entrenched enemy and directly confront the enemy. The assault on the enemy’s position or site is carefully planned and the Infantry soldier is physically, and psychologically ready for his task which exposes him to the threat of death. The soldier loosens the attachment called the ‘Fear of Death’ in his march towards the enemy. A man who is tied down by the ‘Fear of Death’ cannot physically move towards his enemy who symbolizes the threat of death.

Victory over Death – The Psychology of Warfare: We helped the Bangla Muslims to regain their freedom and dignity. The India-Pakistan War of 1971 and the Birth of Bangladesh are very significant achievements of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. As I was then serving in an Establishment under the Cabinet Secretariat, I had direct and personal understanding of her Foreign Policy Initiatives. She personally approved our military Operation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. In the conduct of this War, we faced a very critical moment and it needed her personal intervention and a decision that she alone could make. I rendered my services and had overcome the challenge posed by that critical situation. The importance of this situation could be understood as it needed an intervention from the Prime Minister. I am now asking the Government of India to recognize my Gallant response to conduct a rescue mission in enemy’s territory without any concern for my personal safety.

I participated in the 1971 War of Liberation of Bangladesh. The men of my Unit did not recite the ‘Mrityunjaya Maha Mantra’, but they used its concept in their psychological preparation for War and in their attack on their enemy’s positions. Our success in 1971 over the enemy demonstrates that the concept of breaking the stalk or pedicle is useful to gain victory over the ‘Fear of Death’ before we actually meet the threat of Death.

Psychology of Warfare – Victory over Death: To defend her true nature, to preserve her essence, to resist the violation of her personal dignity and honor, Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh, India courageously responded to a difficult and challenging life situation by an act of self-immolation. Her physical being was destroyed by the fire which she had willingly embraced and yet her spirit has survived. She has declared Victory over Death and she lives as an immortal person in the hearts of Indians and gives them a sense of Pride and Identity. Indian Culture and Tradition glorify the act of giving life to resist the Enemy.

In my blog post titled “Proud to be an Indian”, dated Monday, September 17, 2007, I described the ability to conquer fear as Courage. Courage does not mean the absence of Fear. Rani Padmini has truly immortalized herself by her victory over the Fear of Death. She defeated her enemy’s intention to violate her personal dignity and honor. She could embrace fire for she had overcome the Fear of Death. She lives in our hearts today as a truly “Immortal” person. She is described as a person who declared Victory over Death (Mrityun Jaya).

The challenge called Existence demands an Evening With Katy Perry

Evening With Katy Perry. The Discovery of Hidden Messages. ‘The Cat and The Mouse Game.’
Stay in the Flow – Staying Afloat – The Existential Challenge: #EveningWithKatyPerry

This story relates to a tattoo inscribed on Katy Perry’s right arm. The Sanskrit phrase ‘Anugacchatu Pravaha’ which may literally mean Staying in the Flow has a much deeper meaning and it must be interpreted carefully in the context of the challenge called existence.

To Go With the Flow and to Stay in the Flow, the person has to get into water and Stay Afloat or Stay Alive during a perilous journey.

Stay in the Flow – Staying Afloat – The Existential Challenge: #EveningWithKatyPerry
Stay in the Flow – Staying Afloat – The Existential Challenge: #EveningWithKatyPerry

In the Indian interpretation of existence, the life’s journey is described as swimming across an open ocean without the benefit of navigational charts and tools.

The challenge posed by existence may have to be articulated as the challenge involved in swimming across the open ocean without the use of any floatation device and without knowing the direction in which the swimmer can proceed to safely arrive at the shore. To stay in the flow, apart from staying afloat, the swimmer has to withstand other existential challenges. I see this struggle for existence as a Cat and a Mouse Game.

THE CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME:

Stay in the Flow – Staying Afloat – The Existential Challenge: #EveningWithKatyPerry

In my analysis, Katy Perry’s Tattoo in the Indian Language of Sanskrit is about ‘Staying Afloat’ as in the Indian View, Human Existence poses a great Challenge for it is thought of as a tedious, never-ending swim across the vast, unchartered Ocean called ‘Samsara’. To ‘Go With the Flow’ of Time fundamentally demands to keep one’s precarious existence under all challenging circumstances.

Evening With Katy Perry. Staying Afloat during the very tedious and long Life Journey called SAMSARA. To Go With Flow of Time fundamentally demands to keep one’s precarious existence under challenging circumstances.

I posted this story about ‘The Cat and The Mouse Game’ on December 02, 2014 and updated the story on February 02, 2015 after the XLIX  Super Bowl Game. Many of my readers across the United States have suggested that Katy Perry has responded to The Cat and The Mouse Game Challenge and came riding on a Roaring Cat during the XLIX  Super Bowl Game Halftime performance. Can a Mouse find its way to win the Challenge posed by The Cat Power? For one thing, I admit that The Mouse can tell the difference between a Tiger and a ‘Paper Tiger’. However big it may be, a robotic Cat cannot stop The Mouse in its search for the ‘Hidden Cookie’.

Existentialists endorse The Cat and The Mouse Game as the Game of Life or Existence. Skeptics who habitually doubt, question, or suspend judgment may deny The Cat and The Mouse Game. Whereas the Rationalists concur with the reasonableness of The Cat and The Mouse Game. I am not sure about the rationality of Katy Perry’s attorney who mailed a legal notice to Orlando based artist Fernando Sosa 31 who made a three-inch replica of a Shark figurine using a 3D printer and started selling these sharks on Shapeways.com for $24.99 on Tuesday, February 03, 2015. Katy Perry’s attorney promptly sent him a “Cease and Desist” Letter demanding the shark’s removal citing intellectual property rights. On Wednesday, Shapeways.com canceled orders and refunded customers. In a world ruled by Greed, the Big Cat holds the power to sniffle the Little Mouse and deny even the simplest kind of economic opportunity to support its survival. It reminds me of the scripture, Matthew : 15:27; “Yes it is, LORD.” she (the Canaanite Woman) said, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Fernando Sosa can’t even gather those crumbs that have fallen on the ground near Katy Perry’s Halftime Show.

#EveningWithKatyPerry – WHOLE TEAM – WHOLE COOKIE – WHOLE CHALLENGE: “HIDE AND SEEK” –  THE CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME. THE COMMON HOUSE MOUSE OR MUS MUSCULUS IS QUIET, SHY, TIMID, SLY, AND STEALTHY IN ITS HABITS. IT MOVES UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS AND FINDS FOOD USING CLUES LIKE SCENT AND SMELL RATHER THAN VISION. THE MOUSE IS KNOWN FOR ITS ABILITY TO STEAL FOOD LIKE A THIEF.

It would be interesting to learn about “HIDE AND SEEK” – ‘The Cat and the Mouse Game’. Mouse (Mus musculus) derives its name from the fancied resemblance between the movements of a Mouse and muscle or a body organ that moves in and out in a sly manner. It is a small rodent having tiny ears, and a long, thin tail. Mousing means to seek about or search for something busily and stealthily.

#EveningWithKatyPerry – The Cat and the Mouse Game

The Cat’s search for a mouse is also called ‘Mousing’. The Mouse is known or reputed for its ability to steal food like a thief. But, the connection between Mouse and muscle or flesh is of equal interest. Muscle describes any of the body organs consisting of bundles of cells or fibers that are contracted and expanded to produce bodily movements. Human nature, especially in its sensual aspect, has the nature of ‘flesh’. The term ‘fleshy’ refers to the fondness of sensual, or bodily pleasures. The word ‘Fleshpot’ describes a place where bodily comfort and carnal pleasures are purchased. For these reasons, man’s bodily organ that he uses to find sensual pleasure operates like ‘The Mouse’.

Stay in the Flow – Staying Afloat – The Existential Challenge: #EveningWithKatyPerry

In Computer Science, ‘Mouse’ refers to a small hand-held device that moves on a flat surface in front of a video screen in such a way as to move, or position the cursor or part of the display. I am suggesting the use of the ‘Mouse’ using the sly, and stealthy nature of the common House Mouse, and to find the source of carnal pleasure using clues of “SCENT” or Smell and not of Vision. The information that is hidden from public view, “The Hidden Cookies” derives its name because of its “Scent” or Smell. You have to imagine the “Scent” and conduct the ‘Search’ Mission to discover the ‘Hidden Cookies’.

WHOLE TEAM - WHOLE COOKIE - WHOLE CHALLENGE : THE GREAT CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF PUSS AND PUSSYFOOT???
#EveningWithKatyPerry – WHOLE TEAM – WHOLE COOKIE – WHOLE CHALLENGE: “HIDE AND SEEK” –  THE CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF PUSS AND PUSSYFOOT? THE WORD “PUSS” REFERS TO THE ECHOIC OF THE SPITTING OF A CAT. CATS ARE OFTEN CALLED “PUSSYCATS” BECAUSE OF THE “PUSS” SOUNDS THEY MAKE.  I  USE THE SAME WEBSTER’S NEW WORLD  COLLEGE  DICTIONARY THAT IS SEEN IN THIS IMAGE.

Cat (Felis catus) since ancient times is often kept as a pet and used for killing mice. The word “PUSS” describes the echoic of the spitting of a cat. The term “PUSSYFOOT” means to move with stealth or caution like a cat. The cats that are kept as pets are affectionately called “PUSSYCATS” for they often make those “PUSS” sounds. The cat is known for its hunting ability and it hunts the mouse reputed for its stealing ability. If the Mouse has to succeed in finding the “Hidden Cookies”, the dangerous, and risky Mission demands artfully sly action.

#EveningWithKatyPerry – WHAT ARE COOKIES ?

WHOLE TEAM - WHOLE COOKIE - WHOLE CHALLENGE : TO PLAY "HIDE AND SEEK" - THE CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME, READERS HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF COOKIES.
#EveningWithKatyPerry – WHOLE TEAM – WHOLE COOKIE – WHOLE CHALLENGE: TO PLAY “HIDE AND SEEK” – THE CAT AND THE MOUSE GAME, READERS HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF COOKIES.

Cookie (Dutch. Koekje. koek, refers to a cake) is a small, sweet cake, usually flat, and often crisp. The word “COOKIE” is informally used to describe an attractive, young woman, especially one qualified as tough, smart, and shrewd or as a person of a specified kind. In this context, I recognize Katy Perry as a “Tough Cookie” for she came to a public event wearing a “See-Through” skirt without using the protection offered by underwear which covers and conceals the private parts from public exposure. The terms “Computer Cookies”, Browser Cookies, Internet Cookies, and Tracking Cookies describe small, often encrypted text files in browser directories. Web developers use Cookies to help computer users navigate their websites efficiently and perform certain functions. A Cookie can store user’s information and later the web developer may retrieve that information to recognize the user’s identity. The term “Hidden Cookies” is often used to alert users about concealed spyware or malware that some web developers use to steal the personal identity information of the computer users. The word “COOKIE” means information that is hidden and the information has the potential to expose the person’s identity. For that reason, the parts concealed from public view in the photo images of Katy Perry could be described as the “Hidden Cookies.”

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned Pakistan on Friday to expect a strong response to a suicide attack that killed 44 paramilitary policemen in Kashmir, ratcheting up tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The car bomb attack on a security convoy on Thursday was the worst in decades of insurgency in the disputed region. India said it had “incontrovertible evidence” of Pakistani involvement, a statement quickly rejected by Islamabad.

“We will give a befitting reply, our neighbor will not be allowed to destabilize us,” Modi said in a speech, after meeting security advisers to discuss options.

The attack comes months before national elections in India.

The Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility soon after a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a bus carrying police personnel.

India has for years accused Muslim Pakistan of backing separatist militants in divided Kashmir, which the neighbors both claim in full but rule in part.

Pakistan denies that, saying it only offers political support to the Himalayan region’s suppressed Muslim people.

The White House urged Pakistan “to end immediately the support and safe haven provided to all terrorist groups operating on its soil”.

Pakistan is due to host peace talks next week between the Afghan Taliban and the United States as part of efforts to seek a political settlement to the Afghan war, but escalating tensions with India could divert Pakistan’s attention.

As outrage and demands for revenge flooded Indian social media, Arun Jaitley, one of the most senior figures in the Hindu nationalist-led government, told reporters India would work to ensure the “complete isolation” of Pakistan.

The first step, he said, would include removing most favored nation (MFN) trade privileges that had been accorded to Pakistan – though annual bilateral trade between the countries is barely $2 billion.

The last major attack in Kashmir was in 2016 when Jaish militants raided an Indian army camp, killing 20 soldiers. Weeks later, Modi ordered a surgical strike on suspected militant camps across the border in Pakistan Kashmir.

When he swept to power in 2014, Modi vowed to pursue a tough line with Pakistan. The two countries have gone to war three times since independence from Britain in 1947, twice over Kashmir.

The Line of Control, the de facto border dividing Indian- and Pakistani-held Kashmir, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints, especially after the two countries became nuclear-armed states in 1998.

CALLS FOR REVENGE

Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale summoned Pakistan’s ambassador, Sohail Mahmood, and issued a demarche demanding that Islamabad take verifiable action against Jaish. India also recalled its ambassador in Pakistan for consultations, a government source said.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry also summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad to reject New Delhi’s “baseless allegations,” a Pakistani official said.

Crowds gathered in Jammu, the Hindu-dominated part of Jammu and Kashmir state, to demand stronger action against Pakistan.

A curfew was briefly imposed in Jammu after crowds overturned and set fire to some vehicles. Protesters were also marching to the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi.

The attack comes at a difficult time for Pakistan, which is struggling to attract foreign investment and avert a payments crisis, with its swiftly diminishing foreign currency reserves at less than $8 billion, equivalent to two months of import payments.

The escalating tension risks overshadowing a visit to the region by the Saudi crown prince, who is due in Islamabad over the weekend and New Delhi next week, with both governments hoping to attract Saudi investment.

On Friday, Islamabad said the two-day visit had been put back by a day until Sunday but the programme would remain unchanged. It gave no explanation for the change.

India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh flew into Srinagar, the main city in Indian Kashmir, and joined mourners carrying the coffins of the dead police men, before they were sent to their homes across India.

Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are deployed in Kashmir. Singh said civilian vehicles will be stopped if there is a major movement of military convoys on the main highway following Thursday’s attack.

The separatist insurgency has waxed and waned since the late 1980s but began to pick up in the last five years as a fresh generation of Kashmiris was drawn to militancy.

Soon after Thursday’s attack, Jaish released photographs and a video of a young Kashmiri villager, Adil Ahmad Dar, who it said had carried out the suicide attack on the convoy.

In the video, Dar warned of more attacks to avenge human rights violations in Kashmir. On Friday, hundreds of people gathered at his village of Lethpora to mourn his death.

His parents told Reuters the 20-year-old took up the gun after he was beaten by troops in Kashmir three years ago.

Jaish is one of the deadliest groups operating in Kashmir.

In 2001, it mounted an attack on the parliament in New Delhi that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.

Indian efforts to add Jaish leader Masood Azhar to a UN Security Council blacklist of al Qaeda-linked terrorists have been blocked by China.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang expressed “deep shock” at the latest attack and said Beijing hoped “relevant countries in the region” could cooperate to combat the threat.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Wednesday February 14, 2018 is very significant as the day symbolizes 3-in-1 Celebration of Holy Death from both Hindu and Christian perspectives. There is an interesting coincidence of three holiday traditions; 1. Maha Shivaratri, 2. Ash Wednesday, and 3. Valentine’s Day.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Indians celebrate Maha Shivaratri in the Month of Magha, Krishna Paksha (Waning Phase of Lunar Cycle), on fourth day called Chaturdashi.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

In essence it is celebration of Divine Love to defend man’s mortal existence from premature loss of life.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

In Hindu Mythology, Lord Kamadeva or Cupid known as Lord Manmadha shot his magic arrow to facilitate romantic union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to save humanity from actions of evil power. But Kamadeva pays heavy price for stimulating Lord Shiva’s romantic interest while He meditated with absolute stillness of mind. Later, Lord Shiva restores Kamadeva’s life for he acted to help humanity to save them from their suffering.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Many Hindus observe fasting on the night before Maha Shivaratri Day and spend the night in devotional worship of Lord Shiva to thank him for His Mercy, Grace, and Compassion in responding to man’s fears about Death. Man conquers his Fear of Death by simply burning his desires. In Indian Tradition, Lord Shiva adorns Himself by covering His body with ‘Ashes’ that signify burnt desires. Man keeps his Love of God by sacrificing desires for material comfort and sensual pleasure.

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Ash Wednesday is again celebration of God’s Love. God sent Jesus to save man from Sin and Death. Jesus prepares Himself for His earthly mission for 40 days by fasting and praying. He prepared for His sacrifice through crucifixion to atone for man’s sinful conduct. Ash Wednesday heralds the beginning of ‘Lent Season’ that culminates in Easter Celebration of Resurrection of Jesus after He died on Cross.

“FOR EVEN THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED, BUT TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY.” MARK, 10:45.

Valentine’s Day celebrates romantic interpersonal relationships between men and women. For man is mortal being, man desires to keep feelings of Love alive even after death. Man celebrates enduring and abiding quality of Love for it transcends barriers of Time.

ASH WEDNESDAY IS ABOUT DEATH

Whole Valentine – The Celebration of Holy Death on Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Today is Ash Wednesday, the holiday marking the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period of purification in which Christians often find something to “give up.”

This ritual makes a lot of sense even in modern secular terms. We have juice fasts and cleanses, after all. And indeed, the idea that it could be helpful for all of us to try to get rid of, or at least pause, the superfluous things in our life to focus more on the essential is an idea that is present in spirituality both Eastern and Western, as well as in secular folklore.

Fasting yields spiritual benefits because it is a kind of spiritual workout. Physical exercise works by putting stress on our muscles, and this strengthens them. Something like dieting is worthwhile not just because we expect to get some material benefit from it, like lower weight or better health, but also the spiritual benefit of becoming less attached to material things.

But Lent is about much more than dieting. It’s about death.

For starters, on Ash Wednesday, the priest draws a cross on your forehead with ashes, a reminder that “dust we are and to dust we shall return.” That means death.

This is a part of the Catholic faith that I don’t usually like. Not that death makes me uncomfortable — I believe in life everlasting — but because the faith has been corrupted by the idea that it is simply a get-out-of-hell card, a set of legalistic or pious requirements that one must accomplish to save one’s soul. Christianity shouldn’t just be about avoiding hell — it’s about an encounter with a person whom, we believe, is love made flesh.

The point about ashes and turning away from fleshly reality also offers a reminder of another folk belief that has too long been associated with Christianity: namely, the idea that this world is wholly corrupt and that the body and material goods are to be despised. This belief is actually condemned as a heresy by the Catholic Church, because the Bible affirms that God loves the material world he created.

And yet, while material things like food and drink and sex are all well and good, it is still the case that they are not the most important things in life. And moreover, it is still the case that those things can enslave us. “I can quit any time!” says the smoker, puffing in the rain with a grimace on his face. Tuning down some pleasures might make us realize how much of a hold they have on us.

A reminder of our maturity is perhaps one of the most salutary things we can experience. We are all mortal, and yet we spend our entire lives trying to distract ourselves from this fact. On a day-to-day basis, almost all of us like to think and live and behave as if we will live forever. But we won’t. If you were to die tomorrow — or 40 days from now — what would you change? What would you do differently? Lent pushes us to ask these questions.

Lent is also about death for a much more fundamental reason, one which is much less secular than platitudes about the importance of clean living. Lent is spiritual preparation for the celebration of the Easter cycle, when Jesus Christ was crucified before rising from the dead three days later.

Jesus chose to pour out his divine love on the cross, to give himself fully to us, in an acrobatic act of love that would in a mysterious way bind us to him. Christians, then, are called to imitate him by “dying” — that is to say, by renouncing everything apart from this divine love, everything apart from love of God and love of fellow man.

This, rather than Lent, is the real meaning of Ash Wednesday. I hope you can partake in it.

PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN - THE LEGACY OF RANI PADMINI OF CHITTORGARH
PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN – THE LEGACY OF RANI PADMINI OF CHITTORGARH

If reports are to be believed, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next, Padmavati, is based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem Padmavat.

Jayasi’s poem about Padmini and Khilji, however, does not have a historical basis.

Historians have some understanding of what may have happened in that fateful chapter of the lives of Rani Padmini and Alauddin Khilji.

After Bajirao Mastani, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making another period drama film, Padmavati, this time about Rani Padmini, the queen of Chittorgarh, and Alauddin Khilji, the ruler of Delhi. According to media reports, the film will feature a love story between Padmini and Khilji.

The popular story says that when Khilji attacked Chittor, he fell for Padmini on seeing her reflection in the mirror. This story was woven by a well-known Indian poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi, in 1540 AD, and finds echo in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India as well.

Jayasi’s poem about Padmini and Khilji, however, is not accurate. Historians have, in fact, come up with possible scenarios for what could have actually happened.

According to Jayasi’s poem Padmavat, Rani Padmavati of Chittor was the wife of Raja Ratansen (a name invented by Jayasi with no reference in Mewar history) of Chittor during the reign of Alauddin Khilji. The correct name of Chittor’s then ruler was Rawal Ratan Singh, the thirty-fourth descendant of Bappa Rawal.

What Jayasi’s poem says

There were many talented artists in the court of Ratansen, one of whom was a musician named Raghava Chetan. He was a sorcerer who used his magical powers to target rivals. Once, he was caught red-handed while trying to invoke evil spirits, after which Ratansen banished Raghava from the kingdom after blackening his face. Raghava ran away to Delhi and decided to take revenge by provoking Khilji to attack Chittor.

Raghava knew of a forest near Delhi where Khilji went hunting. One day, he played his flute while Khilji was out hunting. The alluring notes emanating from his flute attracted the attention of Khilji, who then asked his soldiers to fetch the flute player. Thus, Raghava was taken to Khilji’s court.

After reaching Delhi, Raghava told Khilji about the unparalleled beauty of Rani Padmini. That prompted Khilji to attack Chittor, but he found the fort to be heavily defended. So, he laid siege to the fort and forced Ratansen to negotiate with him.

Desperate to capture the beautiful Padmini, Khilji sent a word to Ratansen about him wanting to meet her. The Raja asked Padmini, who flatly refused. However, on being persuaded by her beleaguered husband, Rani Padmini agreed to let Khilji see her in the mirror.

Next, Khilji entered the fort with a group of select warriors who had observed the fort’s defenses on their way to the palace. On seeing Padmini in the mirror, Khilji decided that she must be his.

While returning to his camp, Khilji deceitfully kidnapped Ratansen and took him as prisoner. Thereafter, he informed the Rajput Sardars that Padmini should be handed over to him if they wanted to see their king alive.

The Rajput generals, led by two gutsy warriors, Gora and Badal, who were related to Padmini, decided to beat Khilji at his game. They sent out a word that Padmini would be handed over the next morning.

At the crack of dawn, 150 palanquins (in which royal ladies were carried in medieval times) left the fort and made their way to Khilji’s camp. The palanquins stopped before a tent where King Ratansen was held prisoner. To his surprise, armed Rajputs jumped out from the palanquins, freed Ratansen and galloped away to Chittor, riding the horses grabbed from Khilji’s stable.

Khilji was furious. He ordered the army to storm Chittorgarh. However, the army could not break into the fort. Due to a prolonged siege, food supplies for the troops were running out. So Ratansen opened the fort gates, and Rajputs rode out to fight. They were overpowered, and achieved martyrdom. Rani Padmini and wives of thousands of warriors preferred jauhar (fire is lit, and women jump into the flames) over losing their honor to Khilji’s army.

Place in Chittor where jauhar was committed (Sanjeev Nayyar)

When Khilji entered the fort, all that he found were ashes of these brave women. Their sacrifice has been kept alive by Bards in their songs, where they praise women who preferred supreme sacrifice to dishonor.

When this author visited Chittorgarh Fort in 2008 and asked the guide about the veracity of the mirror story, he said locals did not believe in it.

Having learnt what Jayasi’s poem says, let us now read what the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s book on Indian History says.

In January 1303, Khilji set out on his memorable campaign for the conquest of Chittor. He received strong resistance from the Rajputs under Rana Ratan Singh. The Rajputs offered heroic resistance for about seven months and then, after the women had perished in the flames of jauhar, the fort surrendered on August 26, 1303.

Whilst later writers like Abu-l Fazl, Haji-ud-Dabir (note these two authors use Padmini not as a name, but as a woman possessing special attributes) have accepted the story that the sole reason for invasion of Chittor was Khilji’s desire to get possession of Padmini, many modern writers are inclined to reject it altogether. They point out that the episode of Padmini was first mentioned by Malik Jayasi in 1540 A.D. in his poem Padmavat, which is a romantic tale rather than historical work. Further, the later day writers who reproduced the story with varying details, flourished long after the event, but their versions differed from one another on essential points.

Yarn 2 by Jayasi

In Padmavat, Jayasi wrote that Padmini was the daughter of Raja Gandharva Sen of Sri Lanka. The Lanka story has many contradictions.

1) The name Raja Gandharva Sen is nowhere found in Sinhalese history. The then Buddhist rulers of Lanka had contacts mainly with the Pandya kings of Tamil Nadu and none with Rajputana. The names of Lanka rulers at the time were Vijayabahu III (1220-24), Bhuvanaikabahu I (1281-83), Interregnum (1283-1302) and Vijayabahu V (1325-26 to 1344-45).

Instead, there is a strong possibility that Padmini was a princess of Jaisalmer or of Sinhala, a village near Sojat in Pali district of Rajasthan. In the history of Rajasthan, there are many references which indicate that Rani Padmini was the eleventh wife of Rawal Ratan Singh among his fifteen wives, as polygamy was prevalent among Rajput rulers then. There is, however, no confirmation of her father being Rana Salsi Tanwar as written in the book The Kingdom of Mewar by Irmgard
Meininger, a German author.

2) In Padmavat, there is a reference to a parrot who flew all the way from Sri Lanka to Chittor as a messenger to inform Raja Ratansen, or Rawal Ratan Singh, about the beauty of Padmini, daughter of the Sinhala ruler Gandharvasen, making Ratansen travel all the way to the Sinhala kingdom to win the hand of Padmini. This narrative lacks credibility since Lanka never had a king by that name.

3) Jayasi wrote this poem almost 237 years after Khilji’s attack on Chittor. The literature of that era is full of highly imaginative narratives, and poets were known to gleefully use metaphors, alliterations and imaginary personifications. There is also a reference in Padmavat to a sorcerer called Raghav Chetan, who is believed to have been personified as a parrot.

Contradictions in Jayasi’s poem

Amir Khusro, the court poet of Khilji, who accompanied him during the Chittor attack, did not write about Padmini, nor did he allude any episode to her in his book Twarikh-e-Allai. To be fair, it is possible that Khusro might not have wanted to further spoil the image of Khilji. So, he ignored the reference to Padmini. “According to Prof Habib, there is a covert allusion to Padmini episode by Khusro in his Khazain-ul-Fatuh, where he mentions the Queen of Sheba.”

Equally important is the fact that Col James Tod did not refer to Khilji’s desire to capture the beautiful Padmini in his book The Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan.

There are many instances in history when court poets and writers have followed the instructions of the ruling kings, and wrote histories accordingly. For instance, the book Ain-i-Akbari by Abul Fazal, where he was instructed not to write about Mehrunissa’s — later known as Nur Jahan, wife of Mughal King Jahangir — first marriage with an Afghan Pathan. However, there is a mention of her in Tuzuk-e-Jahangari as his beloved, and how his father had cheated on him.

It would not be wrong to say that Jayasi’s poem Padmavat is a figment of his poetic imagination. “It has also been argued that the invasion of Chittor was the natural expansionist policy of Khilji and no Padmini was need for his casus belli“.

The story of Khilji watching Padmini’s reflection in a mirror, or in a well, as stated in Discovery of India by Pandit Nehru, could have been based on a latter-day interpolation by some local poets. It could also be a phony myth popularized by some imaginative storytellers.

Having questioned the motive for Khilji’s invasion of Chittor, “it should be remembered that Khilji’s lust for a Hindu queen is proved by the known instances of Queen Kamala Devi of Gujarat and the daughter of King Ramachandra of Devagiri. The story of Padmini should not be totally rejected as a myth. But it is impossible, at the present state of knowledge, to regard it definitely as a historical fact”.

In Bajirao Mastani, Bhansali told audiences what a brave general Bajirao Peshwa was. It prompted Col (retired) Anil Athale to write ‘Why Bajirao is India’s greatest cavalry general‘. Having assuaged Maratha pride, Bhansali got away with some historical distortions.

In Padmavati, Bhansali is trying to do a balancing act and be secular. Thus, he might tell audiences how romantic the Sultan of Delhi was, that his love for Padmini was as pure as the holy water of Zamzama, and the sexual conquest of beautiful Hindu queens was the last thing on his mind.

According to a report in the Indian Express, it is alleged by Rajput protesters that Bhansali has deliberately added a dream sequence in his movie which shows Khilji embracing and kissing Padmini, which is an affront to the honor and name of Rani Padmini. It is also a slur on the valor of thousands of Hindu Veeranganas who preferred to die by fire rather than submit to the lust of barbaric invaders.

Bhansali might take refuge under the excuse that the film is based on the poem Padmavat, whose historical significance is unconfirmed. But in the poem, there is no mention of the so-called dream sequence. Ultimately, Bhansali might change the name of the movie, like he did with Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Will it satisfy the nationalists?

Either way, the movie will attract protest like we saw in Jaipur recently. A few things for sure — it will get free publicity, be discussed on prime-time television and become the next battleground between the nationalists and votaries of selective freedom of speech.

WHOLE SPIRITUALITY – WHOLE VICTORY

Spiritualism-The Victory over Death : In Indian tradition, Lord Shiva is the Father Principle and His consort Goddess Parvati is the Mother Principle. Man attains Liberation or ‘Moksh’ and obtains his Release from bondage or ‘Mukti’ or ‘Vimochan’ by severing the connection called ‘Attachment’ to free oneself from the fear of Death. The condition called ‘Death’ causes fear if man is not aware of his Objective Reality. The Truth is that there is no disunity between man and God and there is no separation between man and God.

This hymn called ‘Maha Mrityunjaya  Mantra’ in praise of Lord Shiva known as ‘Triyambaka appears in the ancient Vedic Book of Rig Veda.’

SPIRITUALISM – THE VICTORY OVER DEATH :

SPIRITUALISM – THE VICTORY OVER DEATH: In Indian tradition, the sense of pain and sorrow caused by death is overcome by coming to correct understanding of true or real nature of Man; His Essence and His Existence.

A Funeral Service is being held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Boyd – Panciera Douglas Road Chapel, Pembroke Pines, Florida. In Indian Tradition the grief, the pain, and the sorrow caused by loss is overcome by declaring ‘The Victory over Death’ by expressing an understanding of true or real nature of man and his existence.

“EKAM EVA ADVITIYAM” – “I ONE ALONE AND THERE IS NO SECOND” :

The Individuality of man is described in a thought that is expressed in Sanskrit language and it appears in the ancient Vedic Book of Chandogya Upanishad( 6:2:1 ) which reads: “Ekam eva Advitiyam” meaning – “I one alone and there is no second.” The intent of this statement is that of seeking the unity of the Objective Reality of Man and the Ultimate Reality called God. There is no duality between the two and there is no disunity between Man and God.

SPIRITUALISM – THE VICTORY OVER DEATH : THE LAW OF CREATION AND INDIVIDUALITY :

In Indian tradition it is explained that the human body is composite of three principles; three bodies in one, ‘tri-ani-pada’ – the Causal, the Spiritual, and the Material; Man is a Created Being, Man is a Spiritual Being, and Man is a Physical Being with body, and mind. Human being exists as a dual entity or two “Purusha” – the Higher, Real-self( the Spirit, the Soul, or Atma ) which is unchanging and is the basis for Man’s Individuality, and the Lower, Body-self which is subject constant change in morphological appearance and is the basis for Man’s physical Identity in this world. The Law of Creation and Individuality claims that Man always arrives into the physical world as a newly created object that is original, one of its own kind, distinctive, and unique; an Individual that has not existed in the Past and an Individual that will never again exist in the Future in the material realm. I describe Spiritualism as the potency of the Spiritual Matter that brings Man’s Essence and Existence to come together. Being born relates Man to the Subjective and Objective Reality of a biological existence in the physical and material world. Man because of his innate Spiritual nature has the intrinsic power to uplift himself from an event called Death to sustain his Individuality which is the unchanging, underlying Principle that supports the existence of a changing form with a morphological appearance. Under the influence of the Cyclical Flow of Time, the events called Birth and Death flow from one state into another while the Individual with Individuality remains as, “I, one alone and there is no second.”

Spiritualism-The Victory over Death : I define Spiritualism as an Unchanging, Underlying Principle that supports the existence of every living Object that changes in Nature under the influence of the Cyclical Flow of Time.
