WHOLE FOODS – HAPPY PLACE – HAPPIER PEOPLE:
Whole Foods Market Inc.,(WFM) hired me during April 1997 and since that time I have been working in the Grocery Department at WFM Ann Arbor, Michigan location. Most of my fellow employees recognize me as the “WholeDude who Loves Whole Foods.” A person from Lansing, Michigan visited Ann Arbor on April 10, 2015 and inquired if I am happy working for Whole Foods. He asked for my opinion about Whole Foods as a workplace. I politely responded that I do not believe in private conversations. I prefer to express my opinions in writing and I invite people to respond to my views by offering comments in writing. I could not continue my conversation with that person who desired to investigate working conditions at Whole Foods in general and at Ann Arbor in particular. I would welcome him and others to leave comment on this post and ask for any further information to validate my opinion on Whole Foods – “A Happy Place With Happier People.”
WHOLE FOODS – “A HAPPY PLACE WITH HAPPIER PEOPLE”:
I have demonstrated the fact of my Love of Whole Foods during a Life’s Journey precisely measured in Service Hours. Love and Happiness are purely subjective experiences. But, the fact of Love and the mental condition called Happiness can be accurately verified by using objective criteria to prove that subjective experience. Some of the tested objective standards used in evaluating the ‘morale’ of any workforce include factors such as 1. Absenteeism, 2. Discipline, 3. Financial Security, 4. Sickness/Personal Injuries at workplace, and 5. Stress at workplace. Using these objective measurements, I would like to claim that I Love Whole Foods for I find Happiness at Whole Foods.
1. ABSENTEEISM: Research clearly demonstrates a direct link between absenteeism and the happiness experienced by a worker at his workplace. I worked about 37, 300 Service Hours( not counting Over Time Hours ) without no recorded unscheduled absence from work. Over the last 17 years of my employment at WFM, I generally maintained a Full-Time Status with variable work schedules dictated by the demands of the workplace. Apparently, I do not find the Service to be dull, uninteresting, monotonous, tedious, or boring. In fact, some of those characteristics are often associated with the experience called unhappiness. Unhappy workers tend to be either tardy or remain absent or miss scheduled work.
2. DISCIPLINE: Compliance with the Standards and Ethics of workplace is clearly linked with the ‘morale’ of the worker. Unhappy individuals more often face disciplinary action as compared to happy individuals. I will not be able to claim that I Love Whole Foods and I will not be able to assert that I am happy working at Whole Foods if I do not maintain a “Clean Slate”, a record that is free from marks of discredit or dishonor. I welcome any interested party to verify my personal Record of Service kept at WFM and I fully waive my rights to keep such information as private and confidential.
3. Financial Security: In modern economic life, the true index for personal happiness in life is not the figure on the paycheck. Happiness at workplace is not consistent with financial insecurity. The level of personal indebtedness is a true measure of a person’s financial security. I make a living working at WFM without incurring personal debts or taking Credit Card loans. In other words, while being an hourly wage earner who provides labor at WFM without a signed ‘Contract’, I am able to live a life without experiencing financial insecurity.
4. SICKNESS/PERSONAL INJURIES: A number of studies reveal a relationship between a person’s susceptibility to sickness/ a person’s proneness to injury and the person’s psychological state or condition. Current medical research indicates a connection between mental health and happiness with immune function. Even when the working environment is clean and healthy, unhappy individuals more often report sickness or sustain injuries at workplace. During the time I spent at WFM, I have not missed even a single day of my work on account of sickness or personal injury.
5. STRESS AT WORKPLACE: Occupational Stress is clearly reflected in the personal habits of the workers. Individuals experiencing stress are often driven to find relaxation by using tobacco, alcohol, or any variety of Chemical Substances and Drugs used for recreational purposes. Secondly, workers often take ‘Time Off’ to escape from the stress experienced at the workplace. I do not use tobacco, alcohol, or any other recreational substance and this fact has been consistently verified by voluntary participation in periodic drug screening tests and during medical examination by physicians over a course of 25 years. Apart from my freedom from Chemical Substances, the fact of not experiencing stress during my employment at WFM can be substantiated by the number of ‘Paid Time Off'(PTO) Hours that I have accumulated. I accumulated about 2, 750 PTO Hours to which the WFM has assigned a cash surrender value. In reality, I have not experienced an urge to pursue a habit for its recreational value. I do not watch movies or visit places for personal amusement. If time permits, I listen to songs composed in Indian languages to preserve my language skills.
All said and done, I am not suggesting that personal motivation as the most important factor to find happiness in employment. Happiness is like the Sunshine. To find happiness, the dude needs an external source of Light that generates happiness. To write and state, “WholeDude Loves Whole Foods”, the dude needs to be in relationship with an external source of happiness. WFM has stated ‘Team Member Happiness’ as its Core Value, an Operating Principle to govern the Employer-Employee relationship at the Company. I am submitting that the WFM Core Value of Caring for Team Member Happiness is truly experienced by me. In conclusion, with a sense of great pleasure I claim that Whole Foods is, “A HAPPY PLACE WITH HAPPIER PEOPLE.”

WholeDude wants to encourage Whole Team Members to own Good Books. The ‘Whole Idea’ is to impart ‘Whole Consciousness’ that goes beyond eating good food and drinking the choicest beverages during lifetime.
To encourage Whole Team Members to learn about the Whole Value of Reading Books, WholeDude has resolved to offer a Whole Deal. WholeDude is conscious of the fact that a Whole Team Leader has a huge collection of Comic Books that are carefully preserved in the basement of his house. American epic historical romance film, Gone With The Wind(1939) is still the King of the Movie World. This would be eclipsed when the new film based on my story “GONE WITH THE BOOM” were to be released.
THE THEME OF “GONE WITH THE BOOM”:
The word ‘Gone’ means moved away or departed and in the context of human relationships it explains the loss of feelings and a fundamental change in the nature of a personal relationship or attachment. The word “BOOM” has several meanings; 1. In nautical language, boom refers to stretch out sails as with a boom so as to take maximum advantage of a wind at or toward the stern or rear of a ship and hence make speed. 2. Boom refers to a loud, or booming sound as of thunder, heavy guns etc., and 3. Boom means to increase suddenly in size, importance, activity, wealth, and to undergo swift, vigorous growth or development. Very often “BOOM” means a sudden, favorable turn in business prospects characterized by rapidly increasing economic activity. Boom can be associated with sudden, sometimes unexpected material prosperity and in that sense the word ‘Boom’ is often contrasted with the word ‘Bust’ which means to become penniless or bankrupt, or of financial collapse, economic crash, or sudden, severe personal failure or misfortune. In the good times of prosperity human relationships thrive and develop and in the depressing times of economic bust, relationships fail and wither. In my movie story, a good, thriving relationship which is further cemented by a Covenant or legal contract that gets established during financial hard times of two individuals actually breaks down under influence of sudden wealth that tilts the balance.
The idea of “BOOM” is related to Speed, and Vigor apart from intensity of Sound or of passionate feelings.
The movie Gone With The Wind is David O. Selznick’s adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s sweeping Civil War romance and the story is set in Georgia’s rural county. The movie, “GONE WITH THE BOOM” which is based on my story will be set in urban Washtenaw County of Michigan. The story revolves around a ‘Covenant’ between two main characters; 1. Rudra who symbolizes Lord Ardhanarishwara of the Eastern Indian tradition who combines the Blissful nature of Lord Shiva with masculine identity, and the Force called “SHAKTI.” which always assumes the feminine identity, and 2. Jeshua, Jeshuah(Hebrew. YESHUA) who symbolizes the Messiah, or Joshua which means Jehovah is Salvation.
The movie story, “GONE WITH THE BOOM” revolves around the two main characters Rudra and Yeshua. Rudra wants a sudden, rapid change in his life, he desires a “BOOM” in personal growth, of both personal reputation and social status unrelated to his occupation. But, he needs a personal Savior or Messiah as the Force or Shakti that he has still needs a predetermined action. For him, the Blissful nature of Lord Shiva is the manifested reality of Life that gives a sense of happiness or contentment without attaching any reputation or social recognition.. Yeshua has the inner feeling about his predestination but struggles to know in which direction he must travel to reach that destination with Speed and Vigor. These two characters arrive at an agreement, a binding and solemn contract to do or keep from doing a specified thing or ritualistic practice. In Law, the term Covenant describes a formal sealed contract and a lawsuit could be filed for damages for violation of such a contract. In theology, the term ‘COVENANT’ is used to describe the Promise made by God to man as recorded in the Bible. To promise by a Covenant, or to make a Covenant involves an agreement among parties of that agreement to defend and maintain a doctrine, polity, faith, or some ritualistic practice. Both, Rudra and Yeshua have bonded by a common identity of personal interests and both shared a feeling of economic or social oppression. As if predestined, Yeshua makes a huge windfall of economic fortune and his immediate reaction was that of becoming indifferent towards people with whom he maintained strong relationships. With a sense of indignation if not of malice, Yeshua tries to break the Covenant which has sustained his morale over troubled times. Rudra responds to this sudden change in attitude with a law suit that demanded imposition of a hefty penalty and a full Settlement from Yeshua for cheating on the terms and conditions of the Covenant. Rudra wins the Battle in the Court of Law which upholds the legal, binding contract between the two parties. The Court orders Yeshua to pay the Settlement amount for busting the Covenant. The story reveals that the Messiah has no choice other than that of delivering on his Promise even if he doesn’t give it a ‘damn’. Or, my story could be interpreted to suggest that Yeshua’s sudden change in personal fortune and the busting of the Covenant are both predestined and there is no free will in either of his actions. In the climax scene, Yeshua meets Rudra at their workplace and announces his decision to quit the job and the relationship. However, in compliance to the Court order, Yeshua delivers the Settlement payment of twenty million dollars and places a silver pendant around Rudra’s neck not as a gift, not on account of their former attachment, but as a mark of his total indifference. Yeshua echoes the final words from ‘Gone With the Wind’ and tells Rudra, “Frankly my dear Rudra, I don’t give a damn.” Rudra attempts to give a final handshake to bid goodbye and Yeshua smilingly refuses to extend his hand for the handshake and walks away tossing hundred-dollar bills in the air as Rudra shakes his hand up and down in the air. This holy relationship ended on 12-13-14, a historical date of this century.
Gone With The Boom, the new movie of epic proportions will surpass the greatness of ‘Gone With The Wind’, the reigning King of the Movie World. Yeshua, the Messiah doesn’t give a “damn” to his Promise or to his relationship, and the blissful Rudra gets the social recognition that comes with sudden ‘BOOM’ in his personal wealth while the relationship that created the Boom gets busted. For both Rudra and Yeshua, 12-13-14 is the most memorable day of their entire lives.

WHOLE FOOD – WHOLE IDEALISM vs WHOLE PRAGMATISM:
In Business Practices, A Penny of Pragmatism is Better than a Pound of Idealism. As the saying goes, “One Man’s Meat is another Man’s Poison.” Nothing can be claimed to be ‘HEALTHY’ until man experiences the consequences of the food he consumes.
This article makes a pragmatic inquiry about the relationship between a consumer of food, the food retailer, and the phenomenon of healthy living.
Whole Foods only sells products that are “natural” which the Company defines as minimally processed foods free of hydrogenated fats as well as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. Apart from selling fresh conventional and ‘organic’ fruits and vegetables, it offers prepared foods with “healthy” ingredients and clear labeling. Whole Foods specializes in products produced or grown locally, grass-fed meats, organic ‘free-range’ chicken, just-caught seafood and a variety of bakery items. ‘HEALTH’ magazine published by TIME Inc. Network had asked five nutritionists and a pediatrician to review 35 largest food retailers across the country and announced ‘America’s Healthiest Grocery Stores.” In her opinion, Ms. Kate Geagan, MS, RD, a nutrition consultant, Park City, Utah speaking about Whole Foods stated: “It’s the Rolls Royce of healthy eating.” Dr. Alan Greene, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, California, the chief panelist of HEALTH magazine’s study, confirmed that “Whole Foods has the Whole Package.” In his expert opinion about Whole Foods and its relationship to health of people, Dr. Greene claims, “The Store celebrates great, healthy food from start to finish.” It must be clearly recognized that Dr. Greene and his panel will not be able to publish their findings in any Medical or Science Journal. Such a report that grades grocery stores in terms of health value will be outright rejected for there is no observational evidence to support the claim. To make a cause and effect relationship between a food retailer and the health of a food consumer, the supporting evidence can only come not by simply looking at the products available for purchase at a given store but by making proper health assessments of the consumers over a period of time. Having won this endorsement from Health magazine and its panelists, Whole Foods has registered the phrase “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store” as its TradeMark. In my view, the conclusions of the study conducted by HEALTH magazine lack the validity or objectivity of Science. The methodology used by the six panelists of HEALTH magazine does not involve measurement of objective criteria for assessment of health and there is no experimental verification and validation of their findings. This hypothesis, this mental concept of “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store” must be tested, verified, and be validated without using the subjective experiences of the investigators. I am stating that for this “HEALTH” evaluation, data must be collected with precision, accuracy, and consistency after establishing objective standards for the observations. For the reasons that I mentioned, the study and the findings of the expert panel sponsored by HEALTH magazine have utterly failed to demonstrate a relationship between their claim and the observational evidence. Their conclusions about “America’s Healthiest Grocery Stores” would be mere conjecture, surmise, guesswork, or wishful thinking, or amounts to speculation for their judgment or estimate is not supported by actual knowledge or enough facts for certainty that concern the central issue of the health condition of people who consume food sold by the food retailers that are investigated.
While speaking about the relationship between food and life, it will be important to recognize the five dimensions of Life, namely; 1. the Physical dimension, 2. the Mental dimension, 3. the Social dimension, 4. the Moral dimension, and 5. the Spiritual dimension, which together constitute “Whole Life.” To define the term “Whole Food”, I would like to relate food to the five dimensions of “Whole Life.” My definition of “Whole Food” is as follows:
1. The substance that provides nourishment to maintain and sustain the living functions and thereby protects the Physical well-being of man,
2. The substance that provides the experience of mental contentment, and psychological satisfaction and thereby supports man’s Mental well-being,
3. The substance that provides the stimulus for social interactions, social relationships, and social bonding and thereby supports man’s Social well-being,
4. The substance that provides the ability to man to express his moral and ethical principles in making choices for his living and thereby contributes to man’s Moral well-being, and
5. The substance that provides the spiritual basis for man’s relationship with Divine Providence and thereby preserves man’s Spiritual well-being.
I would be happy if Whole Foods Market defines the term “FOOD” while it claims to be “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store.”
Whole Foods has launched a major national advertisement campaign to boost its brand name and highlight its groundbreaking quality standards. Whole Foods defined the campaign by its “VALUES MATTER ANTHEM.” Whole Foods is specifically asking people to know from where food comes from, what happens to food in its transit, trusting the source of food, fair treatment of people, animals, and places from where food comes from, the way food is grown, raised, or caught, and for a greater good that goes beyond selling food. It may be noted that in Science, if a thing is said to be true, Science explains as to why it is true. For example, as per the quality standards established by Whole Foods, its organic Quinoa could be healthy and nutritious. But, Cancer research indicates that dietary ‘polyamines’ are very important and the polyamine compounds such as spermine, spermidine, and putrescine found in food like Quinoa, Corn, or Grapefruit may accelerate the spread of Cancer. There is a demand to disclose the dietary ‘polyamine’ content of all kinds of foods and to include the information in the Nutrition Facts. As the saying goes, “One Man’s Meat is another Man’s Poison.”
Whole Foods is buying TV advertisements during network and cable shows such as The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Saturday Night Live Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live Show, ‘SCANDAL’, ‘MODERN FAMILY’, Thursday Night Football, and others. Whole Foods has shown a strong commitment to sustainable agriculture, supporting organic farmers, growers, its vendors, its suppliers, and the environment. Whole Foods has a preference to market products that are considered to be environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible. Whole Foods has formulated strictest quality standards for all the products that it sells and has evolved its guidelines for Animal Compassion, Sustainable Seafood, and Produce Production standards. While Whole Foods is engaged in promoting its idea or vision of raising the level of Food Consciousness, I would like to introduce to my readers the concept of ‘PRAGMATISM’.
William James is best known for his books, Principles of Psychology(1890), and Pragmatism(1907). Pragmatism is a method of philosophy in which the truth of a proposition is measured by its correspondence with experimental results and by its practical outcome. Pragmatism finds merit in ideas, policies, and proposals by using criteria such as their usefulness, workability, and practicality. Pragmatism stresses the priority of action over doctrine. Pragmatism places value on ‘experience’ and not upon ‘fixed principles’. For a Pragmatist, the Value of an Idea is borrowed from its Meaning and its consequences. Pragmatist derives truth by using the principle of validation which involves an investigation of the proper methods of procedure. Pragmatism claims that the fact of knowing includes information as to how the fact is known. For the meaning and the truth of any idea are functions of its practical outcome, all principles are to be regarded as working hypotheses and the principles may be changed as new information based upon experience becomes available. Thus pragmatists hold that truth is modified as discoveries are made and truth is relative to time and place and the purpose of inquiry. In the last few decades, medical experts have changed their opinions several times while discussing the relationship between human nutrition and health or well-being. Pragmatism prefers to determine the meaning and the truth of all concepts by their practical consequences. William James stated, “True ideas are those we can assimilate, validate, corroborate, and verify.” For James, true ideas are useful “leadings”, they lead through experience in ways that provide consistency, orderliness, and predictability. Scientific knowledge provides the knowledge to state something is true by sharing the reason why it is true.
The word ‘pragmatic’ (Latin. pragmaticus means skilled in business or law; Greek. pragmatikos, pragma means business) is concerned with actual practice, everyday affairs, being practical and etc., and hence not with dogma, doctrine, or speculation. In Linguistics, the branch called ‘Pragmatics’ is concerned with meaning in context, or the meaning of sentences in terms of the speaker’s intentions in using them. I would invite my readers to join in this conversation and I submit that the truth of an idea(“Healthiest Grocery Store”), or action(“Eat like an Idealist”) should be judged in terms of its outcome in practical human experience.
WHOLE TEAM – WHOLE CONGRATULATIONS – WHOLE GIFT:
I want to extend my “WHOLE CONGRATULATIONS” to two of my “WHOLE TEAM” Members who got selected for appointments in the Management and Supervisory Positions at Whole Foods Market, Ann Arbor.
Two of my ‘Whole Team’ Members got promoted to serve a “WHOLE PURPOSE” in a new role that opens the door to many more opportunities for advancement in Management and Supervisory Positions available at Whole Foods Market.
Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey has stated, “As a company grows, its purpose grows with it. It has the potential to evolve your purpose.” In other words, CEO John Mackey has claimed that the purpose of the Company and the purpose of the Team Members is interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent. I define the term “WHOLE PURPOSE” as the interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent relationship between the purpose of the Company and the purpose of the Team that manages the Company.
I extend my “Whole Congratulations” to the “Whole Team” that manages the Whole Foods Market Company. The Company adheres to its Core Values and provides Equal Opportunity at the place of Employment. The idea of “Equal Opportunity” is a Principle based upon the Natural Law to treat man as an Equal and give man Equal Protection under Law to promote Team Member Happiness and Excellence. I commend the Whole Foods Market for promoting ‘Whole Team’ Members to higher Management and Supervisory positions after holding interviews in a transparent manner and giving equal opportunity to the candidates seeking selection for the same position. The “WHOLE COMPETITION” at the Whole Foods Market is based on the Principle of Equal Opportunity at the workplace.
To extend “Whole Congratulations” to ‘Whole Team’ may cost a bunch of money. I am proposing to spend “Whole Dough” on this “Whole Celebration.”
