Whole Reflections on Whole Christmas Day – Whole Dude at Whole Foods awaits the Second Coming of the Good Samaritan

Whole Christmas – A Septuagenarian applies The Parable of The Good Samaritan to his life today

Redefining Neighbor: The core lesson is that a neighbor isn’t defined by geography, tribe, or belief, but by need. The Samaritan helped a Jew, a traditional enemy, showing love transcends prejudice.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan teaches that “neighbor” means anyone in need, regardless of background, challenging us to show radical compassion, break down social barriers, and act with sacrificial love, even at personal inconvenience, just as the Samaritan helped his enemy, mirroring Jesus’s own mercy and calling us to be active agents of healing in a divided world, not just observers. It moves beyond mere religious duty to demand practical, empathetic action, showing that true worship involves seeing the humanity in others and actively caring for them.

Call to Action: The parable isn’t just a story but a command: “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). We are called to stop, see suffering, and act, even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.

Key Reflections & Lessons:

Redefining Neighbor: The core lesson is that a neighbor isn’t defined by geography, tribe, or belief, but by need. The Samaritan helped a Jew, a traditional enemy, showing love transcends prejudice.

Call to Action: The parable isn’t just a story but a command: “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). We are called to stop, see suffering, and act, even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.

Beyond Rituals: It contrasts the indifference of the priest and Levite with the active mercy, suggesting that true love for God requires love for others, even strangers.

Spiritual & Moral Levels: On a spiritual level, the wounded man represents humanity, and Jesus is the ultimate Good Samaritan who saves us. Morally, it challenges us to be that savior for others, offering personal care, not just resources.

Counter-Cultural Love: In a world of division, it promotes radical empathy and belonging, recognizing the shared humanity in every suffering person.

Questions for Self-Reflection:

God’s Call to Action: The parable isn’t just a story but a command: “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). We are called to stop, see suffering, and act, even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.

Who are the “wounded people” on my roadside (in my community, workplace, family)?

Am I acting like the priest/Levite (bypassing) or the Samaritan (stopping to help)?

How can I show sacrificial love, even at personal cost, to someone I might dislike or overlook?

Who are the “wounded people” on my roadside (in my community, workplace, family)?

I am presenting the story of a Septuagenarian who lives in the U.S. without the usual retirement option. Like many other senior citizens, this Septuagenarian works in a job where the pension plan failed to offer retirement income as the plan lost his savings due to improper investment choices made by the plan administrators. Secondly, this Septuagenarian pays taxes like all others and is yet disqualified from receiving his monthly retirement income benefit from Social Security due to rules imposed by PRWORA of 1996.

Counter-Cultural Love: In a world of division, the Parable of The Good Samaritan promotes radical empathy and belonging, recognizing the shared humanity in every suffering person.

The constitutional validity of regulations imposed by PRWORA is not known as it is not tested in any U.S. Court of Law. In my analysis, PRWORA imposes Involuntary Servitude, Forced Labor, Compulsory Service and Slavery as the Septuagenarian is not allowed the Right claim his own earnings held in Public Trust Fund administered by Social Security Administration.

In my view, Americans are alienated from virtue called Mercy while they generously contribute to various charitable organizations to claim the benefit of tax deduction.

On Thursday, December 25, Christmas Day of 2025, a Septuagenarian simply awaits the arrival of ‘Good Samaritan’ that Jesus describes in a parable. There is no hope of Jesus returning in a few years and for that reason, the Septuagenarian has no hope to quit working in a few years.

Simon Cyrene

Spiritual & Moral Levels: On a spiritual level, the wounded man represents humanity, and Jesus is the ultimate Good Samaritan who saves us. Morally, it challenges us to be that savior for others, offering personal care, not just resources.

‘I HOPE I CAN QUIT WORKING IN A FEW YEARS’ : A PREVIEW OF THE U.S. WITHOUT PENSIONS

© NICK OXFORD/Nick Oxford for The Washington Post Tom Coomer makes a pot of coffee at his home in Wagoner, Okla., after a day of work at Walmart. So here he is at 79, working full time at Walmart. During each eight-hour shift, he stands at the store entrance greeting customers, telling a joke and fetching a “buggy.” Or he is stationed at the exit, checking receipts and the shoppers that trip the theft alarm.

“As long as I sit down for about 10 minutes every hour or two, I’m fine,” he said during a break. Diagnosed with spinal stenosis in his back, he recently forwarded a doctor’s note to managers. “They got me a stool.”

The way major U.S. companies provide for retiring workers has been shifting for about three decades, with more dropping traditional pensions every year. The first full generation of workers to retire since this turn offers a sobering preview of a labor force more and more dependent on their own savings for retirement.

Years ago, Coomer and his co-workers at the Tulsa plant of McDonnell-Douglas, the famed airplane maker, were enrolled in the company pension, but in 1994, with an eye toward cutting retirement costs, the company closed the plant. Now, The Washington Post found in a review of those 998 workers, that even though most of them found new jobs, they could never replace their lost pension benefits and many are facing financial struggle in their old age: One in seven has in their retirement years filed for bankruptcy, faced liens for delinquent bills, or both, according to public records.

Those affected are buried by debts incurred for credit cards, used cars, health care and sometimes, the college educations of their children.

Some have lost their homes.

And for many of them, even as they reach beyond 70, real retirement is elusive. Although they worked for decades at McDonnell-Douglas, many of the septuagenarians are still working, some full time.

Lavern Combs, 73, works the midnight shift loading trucks for a company that delivers for Amazon. Ruby Oakley, 74, is a crossing guard. Charles Glover, 70, is a cashier at Dollar General. Willie Sells, 74, is a barber. Leon Ray, 76, buys and sells junk.

© NICK OXFORD/Nick Oxford for The Washington Post Former McDonnell Douglas employee Ruby Oakley works five days a week as a crossing guard for an elementary school in Tulsa, Okla. “I planned to retire years ago,” Sells says from behind his barber’s chair, where he works five days a week. He once had a job in quality control at the aircraft maker and was employed there 29 years. “I thought McDonnell-Douglas was a blue-chip company — that’s what I used to tell people. ‘They’re a hip company and they’re not going to close.’ But then they left town — and here I am still working. Thank God I had a couple of clippers.”

Likewise, Oakley, a crossing guard at an elementary school, said she took the job to supplement her Social Security.

“It pays some chump change — $7 an hour,” Oakley said. She has told local officials they should pay better. “I use it for gas money. I like the people. But we have to get out there in the traffic, and the people at the city think they’re doing the senior citizens a favor by letting them work like this.”

Glover works the cash register and does stocking at a Dollar General store outside Tulsa to make ends meet. After working 27 years at McDonnell-Douglas, Glover found work at a Whirlpool factory, and then at another place that makes robots for inspecting welding, and also picked up some jobs doing AutoCAD drawing.

© NICK OXFORD/Nick Oxford for The Washington Post Leon Ray stands amid a collection of junk that he restores and recycles at his home in Claremore, Okla.

“I hope I can quit working in a few years, but the way it looks right now, I can’t see being able to,” Glover said recently between customers. “I had to refinance my home after McDonnell-Douglas closed. I still owe about 12 years of mortgage payments.”

For some, financial shortfalls have grown acute enough that they have precipitated liens for delinquent bills or led people to file for bankruptcy. None were inclined to talk about their debts.

“It’s a struggle, just say that,” said one woman, 72, who filed for bankruptcy in 2013. “You just try to get by.”

A perk that became too costly

The notion of pensions — and the idea that companies should set aside money for retirees — didn’t last long. They really caught on in the mid-20th century, but today, except among government employers, the traditional pension now seems destined to be an artifact of U.S. labor history.

The first ones offered by a private company were those handed out by American Express, back when it was stagecoach delivery service. That was in 1875. The idea didn’t exactly spread like wildfire, but under union pressure in the middle of the last century, many companies adopted a plan. By the 1980s, the trend had profoundly reshaped retirement for Americans, with a large majority of full-time workers at medium and large companies getting traditional pension coverage, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Then corporate America changed: Union membership waned. Executive boards, under pressure from financial raiders, focused more intently on maximizing stock prices. And Americans lived longer, making a pension much more expensive to provide.

The average life expectancy in 1950 was 68, meaning that a pension had to pay out only three years past the typical retirement age of 65. Today, average life expectancy is about 79, meaning that the same plan would have to pay out 13 years past typical retirement age.

Exactly what led corporate America away from pensions is a matter of debate among scholars, but there is little question that they seem destined for extinction, at least in the private sector.

Even as late as the early 1990s, about 60 percent of full-time workers at medium and large companies had pension coverage, according to the government figures. But today only about 24 percent of workers at midsize and large companies have pension coverage, according to the data, and that number is expected to continue to fall as older workers exit the workforce.

In place of pensions, companies and investment advisers urge employees to open retirement accounts. The basic idea is that workers will manage their own retirement funds, sometimes with a little help from their employers, sometimes not. Once they reach retirement age, those accounts are supposed to supplement whatever Social Security might pay. (Today, Social Security provides only enough for a bare-bones budget, about $14,000 a year on average.)

The trouble with expecting workers to save on their own is that almost half of U.S. families have no such retirement account, according the Fed’s 2016 Survey of Consumer Finances.

Of those who do have retirement accounts, moreover, their savings are far too scant to support a typical retirement. The median account, among workers at the median income level, is about $25,000.

“The U.S. retirement system, and the workers and retirees it was designed to help, face major challenges,” according to an October report by the Government Accountability Office. “Traditional pensions have become much less common, and individuals are increasingly responsible for planning and managing their own retirement savings accounts.”

The GAO further warned that “many households are ill-equipped for this task and have little or no retirement savings.”

The GAO recommended that Congress consider creating an independent commission study the U.S. retirement system.

“If no action is taken, a retirement crisis could be looming,” it said.

‘We were stunned’

Employees at McDonnell-Douglas in the early ’90s enjoyed one of the more generous types of pensions, those known as “30 and out.” Employees with 30 years on the job could retire with a full pension once they reached age 55.

But, as the employees would later learn, the generosity of those pensions made them, in lean times, an appealing target for cost-cutters.

Those lean times for McDonnell-Douglas began in earnest in the early ’90s. Some plants closed. But for the remaining employees, including those at the Tulsa plant, executives said, there was hope: if Congress allowed the $6 billion sale of 72 F-15s to Saudi Arabia, the new business would rescue the company. In fact, the company said in its 1991 annual report, it would save 7,000 jobs.

To help win approval for the sale, Tulsa employees wrote letters to politicians. They held a rally with local politicians and the governor of Oklahoma. And eventually, in September 1992, President George H.W. Bush approved the sale. It seemed that the Tulsa plant had weathered the storm.

The headline in the Oklahoman, one of the state’s largest newspapers, proclaimed: “F-15 Sale to Saudi Arabia Saves Jobs of Tulsa Workers.”

But it hadn’t. Within months, executives at the company again turned to cost-cutting. They considered closing a plant in Florida, another in Mesa, Ariz., or the Tulsa facility. Tulsa, it was noted, had the oldest hourly employees — the average employee was 51 and had worked there for about 20 years. Many were close to getting a full pension, and that meant closing it would yield bigger savings in retirement costs.

“One day in December ’93 they came on the loudspeaker and said, ‘Attention, employees,’ Coomer recalled. “We were going to close. We were stunned. Just ran around like a bunch of chickens.”

A few years later, McDonnell-Douglas, which continued to struggle, merged with Boeing. But the employees had taken their case to court, and in 2001, a federal judge agreed that McDonnell-Douglas had illegally considered the pensions in its decision to close the plant. The employees case, presented by attorneys Joe Farris and Mike Mulder, showed that the company had tracked pension savings in its plant closure decisions.

The judge found McDonnell-Douglas, moreover, had offered misleading testimony in its defense of the plant closing. The judge, Sven Erik Holmes, blasted the company for a “corporate culture of mendacity.”

Employees eventually won settlements — about $30,000 was typical. It helped carry people over to find new jobs. But the amount was limited to cover the benefits of three years of employment — and it was far less than the loss in pension and retiree health benefits. Because their pension benefits accrued most quickly near retirement age, the pensions they receive are only a small fraction of what they would have had they worked until full eligibility.

“People went to work at these places thinking they’ll work there their whole lives,” Farris said, noting that the pensions held great appeal to the staff. “Their trust and loyalty, though, was not reciprocated.”

Dreaming of work

The economic effects were, of course, immediate.

The workers, most of them over 50, had to find jobs.

Some enrolled in classes for new skills, but then struggled to find jobs in their new fields. They wondered, amid rejections, whether younger workers were favored.

Several found jobs at other industrial plants. One started a chicken farm for Tyson. Another took a job on a ranch breaking horses.

The Post acquired a list of the 998 employees, reviewed public records for them, and interviewed more than 25.

Of those interviewed, all found work of one kind or another. Yet all but a handful said their new wages were only about half of what they had been making. Typically, their pay dropped in half, from about $20 per hour to $10 per hour.

The pay cut was tough, and it made saving for retirement close to impossible. In fact, it has made retirement itself near impossible for some — they must work to pay the bills.

A few said, though, they work because they detest idleness, and persist in jobs that would seem to require remarkable endurance.

Combs, for example, works the graveyard shift, begins each workday at 1:30 a.m. His days off are Thursday and Sunday. He worked 25 years at McDonnell-Douglas, and more than 20 loading trucks.

He shrugs off the difficulty.

“I don’t want to sit around and play checkers and get fat,” Combs says. “I used to pick cotton in 90-degree heat. This is easy.”

Coomer, too, even if he would have preferred to retire, seems to genuinely enjoy his work. At Walmart, his natural cheerfulness is put to good use.

“Hi, Tom, how are you?” a customer on a motorized scooter, one of many who greet him by name, asks on her way out.

“Doing good . . . beautiful day,” he says, smiling warmly.

Later he explains his geniality.

“I like to talk to people! I like to visit with them. I can talk to anyone. I’ve always been like that, since I was a kid.”

When he sees someone looking glum, he tells them a joke.

Why does Santa Claus have three gardens?

So he can hoe, hoe, hoe.

“People really like that one,” he says.

Coomer grew up on a farm in Broken Arrow, got married when he was 17 — his wife was 15 — and says he’s always liked work.

“I really loved working at McDonnell-Douglas,” he says, One time, he says, he worked 36 days straight: 11 hours on the weekdays and eight hours on Saturdays and Sundays. He joked that the factory was his home address. All along, for his 29 years there, he had his eye on the pension. And then, for the most part, it was gone.

After the plant closed, Coomer worked as a security guard. Then he worked for a friend who had a pest-control company. When that slowed down, he picked up seasonal work at the city, doing some mowing and chipping.

Then came Walmart.

Soon, he said, he expects to cut back from full time to about three days a week.

Along with his Walmart check, he gets $300 a month from the McDonnell-Douglas pension. Had he been able to continue working at McDonnell-Douglas, he calculates that he would have gotten about five times that amount.

“After they shut the plant down, I would dream that I was back at McDonnell-Douglas and going to get my pension,” Coomer recalled. “In the dream, I would try to clock in but I couldn’t find my time card. And then I’d wake up.”

In the dream, he would have retired years ago.

In my analysis, freedom is a myth, or an illusion. The man is fundamentally trapped inside the belly of a great fish prepared by God.

The biblical prophet Jonah represents the reality of my life’s journey. God has foreknowledge of my thoughts and actions and has prepared the place for my entrapment without giving me any further access to seek the freedom of movement. Just like Jonah, I am surprised to find myself alive in the body of a fish. Just like Jonah, I give thanks to God for keeping me alive. However, I do not share the hope and confidence of Jonah about the ultimate deliverance. Jonah fervently prayed and the fish vomited him onto the dry land after holding him captive for three days and three nights. I do not pray for my freedom as I am not born free. The big fish values its own freedom of movement and declares itself to be the champion of freedom without any concern for the lack of my individualistic freedom and personal liberty. I may share Jonah’s sense of self-pride, self-centered egotism, without proper respect for God or love for my enemies. I want God to account for His own actions while I taste the bitter fruits borne out of my own actions.

India is my country of origin. I left India in January 1984 due to a concern about my freedom due to the threats emanating from my service rendered to an external intelligence agency in coordination with India’s external intelligence agency known as Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW); this has driven me to resign my job in the Indian Army Medical Corps. I reached the United States during July 1986 to eventually experience that I have lost all freedom; I gave up freedom associated with my Indian citizenship and found that my existence is not dependent upon freedom but upon Divine Providence and Sovereign Grace. Do I have a choice? Is freedom an entitlement? Is there freedom in Free World? Freedom is it self-determined or is it determined by external causes?

The word ‘freedom’ has many meanings – theological, metaphysical, psychological, moral, natural, and civil. Freedom may mean enjoyment of personal liberty, of not being a slave, nor a prisoner, and it speaks about the freedom in acting and choosing. Freedom may imply the state of not being subject to determining forces.

I arrived in the United States for I believe in the Motto of this Nation: “In God We Trust.” The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Ephesians, Chapter 2:19 speaks of my quest for freedom: “Consequently, you are no longer Foreigners and Aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household.”

I seek freedom to enter God’s household for I am not a foreigner, or alien. There is a promise in The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Romans, Chapter 9:25: As He says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;”

“Free World” is a Cold War era term often used by the US to describe those countries that are not in the sphere of influence of Communist States like the Soviet Union, or the People’s Republic of China. United States is the Leader of the Free World, and it is the world’s Democratic Superpower. In response to Communist China’s military occupation of sovereign nation of Tibet, the United States, to defend its own national interests and to combat the threat of Communist Expansionism, during the presidency of Truman and Eisenhower initiated programs in 1950s to render assistance to the Tibetan Resistance Movement to uphold the principles of Freedom and Democracy in the Land of Tibet. John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States (1961-1963) created a military alliance/pact between the US, India, and Tibet to contain the military threat posed by Communist China.

In September 1969, I made a deliberate choice to serve in the Indian Army Medical Corps to face the military challenge and threat posed by China after her brutal attack on India across the Himalayan frontier in 1962. On completion of my military training, I joined the US, India, Tibet military alliance/pact and was posted to Headquarters Establishment No. 22, a military organization also known to public as Vikas Regiment and Special Frontier Force. I view myself as very passionate defender of Freedom and Democracy. During the years spent in India, in my imagination, I had freedom to choose and act and deliberately expressed this sense of personal freedom when I got married in January 1973. This personal choice had its own consequences. It initiated a process of alienation and estrangement from my birth-related social community. The first blow to my sense of social identity and birth affiliation was delivered in May 1976 while I was at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. By year 1982, I fully recognized that I have no freedom to choose, or act without compromising my sense of self-respect, and self-dignity. For all practical purposes, in my estimate, I was transformed into a Foreigner or Alien while I was still serving my country as a Commissioned Officer of its Armed Forces. It undermined my ability to serve in the Armed Forces to defend Freedom of the Country while in my perception I existed as Foreigner or Alien. At that time, as the father of two young children, I felt that I have no choice other than that of leaving India to find a place in another part of Free World, a place prepared for me by God. Having stepped inside of the mouth of a big fish, I got easily swallowed by the force of the external circumstances. Now, I am conscious of the lack of freedom to make choices, or I may state that I am only free to make a choice that is foreordained or predetermined.

Fourth of July is observed as the US Independence Day. This celebration calls for a study on the problem of Freedom in World, and the problem of Freedom in the individualistic human experience.

In the drama of human life and history, do we have capacity to choose our Life according to our Free Will? The issue of human freedom, and Freedom in World may have to be reconciled with God’s omniscience, and omnipotence. We must understand as to what extent the will of an individual can and does determine some of his acts. If man is entirely dependent upon God’s power, can man make bad, or evil choices? Do we need divine grace for both meritorious, and even terrible acts? How to define the problem of the universal supposition of responsibility for personal actions? Can there be Freedom in the absence of Divine Providence, and Sovereign Grace?

Determinism and Free Will:

The kid in the above photo image apparently has free will and can choose to get wet in the rain. He can also choose to remain under some shade and keep dry. This ability to choose is operated by an external contingency called rain. Does man have the natural ability to make choices in the face of all types of external contingencies? Plato held that actions are determined by the extent of a person’s understanding, or reasoning. The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Romans, Chapter 8, verses 28-30 describe the concept of “Predestination.” Verse. 30 reads: “Moreover, those He predestined, them He also called; those He called, them He also Justified; those He justified, them He also glorified.” I live in expectation of finding this ‘glory’ in the eyes of God.

The term free will refers to the power or capacity to choose among alternatives. It refers to the ability to act in certain situations independently of natural, social, or divine restraints. Will is the factor which turns human thought into human action and behavior. Existentialist thinkers like Jean Paul Sartre speak about the concept of a radical, perpetual, and frequently agonizing freedom of choice. Sartre claims that man is “condemned to be free” even though his situation may be wholly determined. Behavioral psychologists hold the view that human action and behavior is determined by the nature of an external environmental stimulus. Sigmund Freud held the view that human actions are determined by hidden mental causes which control their actions; “You have an illusion of a psychic freedom within you which you do not want to give up.” Freud recommends that this “deeply rooted belief in psychic freedom and choice” must be given up because it “is quite unscientific.” Man appears to be subject to the Law of Cause and Necessity or is governed by a doctrine of Determinism.

The Doctrine of Predestination:

Saint Augustine (354-430), Doctor of the Church, founder of Christian theology followed the doctrine of predestination or divine grace that states God’s superintendence of the Whole Cosmos and everything in it.

Martin Luther (November 10, 1483, to February 18, 1546), German theologian, leader of the Protestant Reformation held the view that everything is determined by God from the beginning.

John Calvin (1509 – 1564), French Protestant theologian of the Reformation held the view that human free will is predetermined. While rejecting the role of free will, Calvinism maintains that God’s grace is irresistible.

Saint Thomas Aquinas held the view that God’s omnipotence does not include predetermination of human will. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that predestination is consistent with free will since God moves the soul according to its nature. Do I make my own choices while God foreordained my circumstances? Does God have foreknowledge of my reaction to His Choice? If God foreordained the circumstances, the choices, and the destiny of the person according to His Perfect Will, how to explain the exercise of free will? It appears to me that God may elect or predestinate the circumstances of a person and make a choice on His own initiative based on His knowing in advance the reactions of the person to His Will. Man’s free will is like the game of chess; man can make his moves while playing the game according to God’s plan while God is the second Player with whom man must contend.

The New Testament Book, The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Ephesians, Chapter 2:21 reads: “In Him the Whole building is joined together and rises to become a Holy Temple in the LORD.” Why does this Temple in Malibu treats me as a Foreigner and Alien providing an external contingency that took away my Freedom?

Palm Sunday According to the Whole Gospel: The Gospel According to Saint Matthew is the First Book of The New Testament. Its historical account of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday differs from the other three Gospels. The Gospel Story that I am sharing describes vision of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel According to Saint Matthew:

Palm Sunday 2025. Simon Cyrene, the Bearer of the Cross Leads a Donkey’s Life of Service, Carrying the Burdens of Life With Humility. Being a Donkey, the US determined that I am not entitled to Human Rights.

The Gospel of Matthew was written in Greek language; is the most highly valued, most popular, and widely read of the four Gospels. This is revealed not only by its position in the canon, it is found in first place in most of the known lists of the Gospels but also by the fact of its widespread citation and for it is by far the most often quoted Gospel. Matthew, the Apostle (The Book of Matthew, Chapter 10, verse 3) was eyewitness to the most significant events of Christ’s life and mission. Matthew (Greek. Maththaios) was initially known as Levi, a tax collector (telones) whom Jesus met at the tax office (Matthew, Chapter 9, verse 9). Levi changed his name to Matthew (Hebrew. “Gift of Yahweh”) and it may mean “Amittai” or “True”, when he became a disciple of Jesus. He carefully recorded all the teachings and sayings of Jesus and the Book of Matthew is the teaching Gospel par excellence. Matthew’s Gospel is also the Gospel of fulfillment and it is especially concerned with showing that Christ is fulfillment of the Revelations of The Old Testament. Matthew’s Gospel is the historical record of Jesus Christ, the King of Jews. It describes the birth of the King, preparation of the King, the Law of the Kingdom, the power of the King, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the rejection of the King, the growth of the Kingdom, the Mission of the King, the Fellowship of the Kingdom, the Triumphal entry of King into Jerusalem, the Consummation of the Kingdom, the Death and Resurrection of the King, and finally the great challenge of the Kingdom. I would like to focus upon the most important event of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem as a King in a ceremonial procession.

Simon Cyrene, the Bearer of the Cross, Lives the Life of a Donkey:

Cross (Greek. Stauros): There are three biblical uses of the term: first, the wooden instrument of torture; second, the Cross as a symbolic representation of redemption; third, death on the Cross, i.e., Crucifixion. The English word ‘Cross’ is derived from the Latin ‘Crux’. The Cross existed in different forms, the most important form is known as ‘The Crux immissa’, the type of Cross usually presented in Art in which the upright beam extends above the cross beam, and traditionally this depiction of Cross is held to be the Cross on which the ‘Redeemer’ suffered and died. It is often called the ‘Latin form of Cross. Because of the sacrificial death of the Savior on the Cross, it is presented as the medium of Reconciliation (The Epistle of Apostle Paul to Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 16) between man and God. In The Epistle of Apostle Paul to the Colossians, Chapter 1, verse 20, states that Peace is effected through the Cross and Chapter 2, verse 14 also claims that the penalties of the law are removed from the believer by the Cross.

The Epistle of Apostle Paul to the Galatians, Chapter 2, verse 20 says that man is crucified with Christ and lives by faith of the Son of God. Crucifixion is a dreaded event, and in common usage, the cares and troubles of life are often compared to a Cross. Kindly examine the connection between Cross and the humble Donkey which man uses as a beast of burden.

Palm Sunday According to the Whole Gospel: The ‘Cross’ is a symbolic representation of redemption, it describes the act known as Crucifixion or death on the Cross on which the Redeemer suffered and died. Donkey, Equus africanus asinus has a dark stripe from the mane back to onto the tail and a prominent crosswise stripe across the shoulders.
Donkeys are domesticated descendants from African ass (true ass) known as Equus asinus which belongs to the Horse family of Equidae. Donkeys derived from Nubian and Somalian subspecies of African wild ass have served mankind since 4,000 B.C. It is tamed and trained for work. It is sturdy, surefooted, known for its endurance and for its ability to carry heavy loads. Donkeys were a fundamental part of economy, they undertook heavy work on the farm and sometimes used for personal transportation. In the southwestern United States, the small donkey is known as ‘Burro’, the word for donkey in Spanish language. Many Americans are very fond of eating ‘burrito’, a Mexican dish consisting of a flour tortilla wrapped around a filling of meat, cheese, refried beans, etc. However, most Americans are not familiar with the crosswise stripes on Donkey’s back that could be termed as ‘Donkey Cross’. Donkey is frequently mentioned in the Books of Bible; Prophet Abraham’s journey of testing, with his son Isaac, was made with a donkey (The First Book of Moses, Genesis, Chapter 22, verses 3,5), Balaam’s donkey was given the temporary power of speech in order to rebuke the foolish prophet (The Fourth Book of Moses, Numbers, Chapter 22, verses 21-33), Israelites captured some 61,000 donkeys from the Midianites (The Fourth Book of Moses, Numbers, Chapter 31, verse 34). Mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a horse mare and it is sterile. King David introduced the use of mule for riding. In the Biblical times, mules were used by kings, officials, and army officers for personal transportation. Jesus Christ, the one coequal with God descended to agony and torture of death due to Crucifixion by riding on the back of a donkey to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9

“Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your King is coming to you.
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”

In the Gospel According to Mark, Chapter 11, verse 2, in the Gospel According to Luke, Chapter 19, verse 30, and in the Gospel According to John, Chapter 12, verse 14, no mention was made about the female donkey which was needed by Jesus and fetched by His disciples. Many Biblical scholars are not able to explain this apparent discrepancy in the four Gospel accounts and they are not certain if one or two donkeys are involved and the gender identity of the donkey(s) that Jesus used for His victorious entry into Jerusalem. The four Gospel accounts are incomplete and have not revealed the Whole Story of the Donkey and the Donkey Cross.

President Harry S. Truman signs the National Security Act, which becomes one of the most important pieces of Cold War legislation. The act established much of the bureaucratic framework for foreign policymaking for the next 40-plus years of the Cold War.

By July 1947, the Cold War was in full swing. The United States and the Soviet Union, once allies during World War II, now faced off as ideological enemies. In the preceding months, the administration of President Truman had argued for, and secured, military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey to assist in their struggles against communist insurgents. In addition, the Marshall Plan, which called for billions of dollars in U.S. aid to help rebuild war-torn Western Europe and strengthen it against possible communist aggression, had also taken shape. As the magnitude of the Cold War increased, however, so too did the need for a more efficient and manageable foreign policymaking bureaucracy in the United States. The National Security Act was the solution.

The National Security Act had three main parts. First, it streamlined and unified the nation’s military establishment by bringing together the Navy Department and War Department under a new Department of Defense. This department would facilitate control and utilization of the nation’s growing military. Second, the act established the National Security Council (NSC). Based in the White House, the NSC was supposed to serve as a coordinating agency, sifting through the increasing flow of diplomatic and intelligence information in order to provide the president with brief but detailed reports. Finally, the act set up the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA replaced the Central Intelligence Group, which had been established in 1946 to coordinate the intelligence-gathering activities of the various military branches and the Department of State. The CIA, however, was to be much more–it was a separate agency, designed not only to gather intelligence but also to carry out covert operations in foreign nations.

The National Security Act formally took effect on September 1947. Since that time, the Department of Defense, NSC, and CIA have grown steadily in terms of size, budgets, and power. The Department of Defense, housed in the Pentagon, controls a budget that many Third World nations would envy. The NSC rapidly became not simply an information organizing agency, but one that was active in the formation of foreign policy. The CIA also grew in power over the course of the Cold War, becoming involved in numerous covert operations. Most notable of these was the failed Bay of Pigs operation of 1961, in which Cuban refugees, trained and armed by the CIA, were unleashed against the communist regime of Fidel Castro. The mission was a disaster, with most of the attackers either killed or captured in a short time. Though it had both successes and failures, the National Security Act indicated just how seriously the U.S. government took the Cold War threat.
